lens betrayal...

guilt.

I am feeling it.

My husband is out of town and yesterday, I did something that I normally would have never done. I blame it on the excitement over my upcoming trip to France. I feel like I am cheating - betraying the ones I love. The thing is, it isn't that I don't love the ones I love, or that I am not loyal to them - because I am. basically.

Have you ever felt like you are cheating on your lenses? No? Is that just me? Hhmmm...

You see, I am a prime girl. For the past two years I have loved prime lenses. First it was my 50mm. The photos I took with her were so creamy and delicious. She was the only thing on Stella (and then Francis). I then discovered my 20mm - thanks to Pioneer woman. She is wonderful when I want to shoot wide things - my ENTIRE kitchen, the WHOLE barn, etc... While she is specific, she is wonderful and very useful for what I shoot. Most recently, I discovered my 35mm and she has been my constant companion ever since. She is flexible, she lets me get really close to things and still focus, she is light, and she basically fills nearly every requirement I have for her. She is near perfect for me.

but.....

I am going to France in less than two months. I have been going back and forth over which lenses I would bring. I would obviously bring the 35mm, which basically negates the need for the 50mm. I would then want to bring the 20mm for architecture shots as that is going to be a large focus while we are there. And then, do I bring the really low quality lens with zoom for more flexibility? I really do need something more than the 35mm and the 20mm.

the answer: 24-70mm. Almost as wide as the 20, with enough zoom to not have to be on top of something to shoot it, and yet, the ability to get really close and still focus. A bit heavier than my primes, but one lens. period. And what a lens! She is amazing. I had her out on the property today and was able to get every shot that I would have with my other lenses.

I then brought her indoors and grabbed some shots of my bed. She really is fabulous~

Hello! Just wondering, did you know that your Blogspot is featured in the new Romantic Homes. Good Job!

Your shots are just beautiful, whatever the lens....but that shot of your bed is particularly dreamy. I thought it was from a beautiful magazine. The fact that the bed was unmade sits well with me...I feel less guilty about my own unmade bed. Perhaps I can now pass it off as "casually styled" not merely unmade? Meredy xo.

Hello there! I have always been a fan of your pictures when I have seen them on RMS and now I found your blog! I totally get the whole lens envy thing and feel for the lenses as they suffer through it. I am by no means as great of a photographer as you are, but I do love it!

I have a sad story to tell. I actually let me husband talk me out of taking my camera to Germany and France with us on our last visit, and we took his point and shoot. I don't know what came over me and I regret it to this day!

We got there and he figured out that he didn't even bring the charger so I didn't take as many pictures as I normally would. I also found there isn't as much focus on my frou-frou pictures with a four year old in tow! I can't wait to see your pictures and if you ever want to help out a fellow photographer, I would love any help or advice!

Well, back to the Amazon shopping board. I just snapped on my new 70-300 yesterday.. Nikon D90 and I am going to take a look at the others now! GOOD "Customer Review" though from someone we know is telling us the truth from what we can see. Thank you for the great information in a nutshell!

Oh Kim, I soooo need to take a class from you. Can't you start some sort of online class for those of us that have these fabulous SLR cameras but have no idea how to use them?? ;o) I still have my standard lens, but I feel an upgrade coming on. I may have to email you for advice! ~mary~

My love, let me just say that I take my 24-70 off my camera twice a year. I use it for the whole "shooting match", so to speak. The Nikkor is so much better than my old Tokina (trusty as it was).
I'm a Zoomin' girl.
Zoom-zoom-zoom.

(I love that all your girls have names...help me name mine...it's not coming to me...it must go with The Big Kahuna, though).

I kept a 24-70 on my Canon for about 10 years--back when I could only afford one lens and that was it.
Now I tend to keep the 35mm on all the time. hahaha--I guess that doesn't really help you much!

Kim is that your bedstand? I have the matching dresser/mirror (Bernhardt) that I have been wondering what to do with, are you looking for a mate?

While in Paris know that you will want to take pictures every single second..when my sister and I went she took the pictures with her good camera the entire trip. I felt so lucky because she did that so that I could relax and take it all in and know that it was getting documented.....maybe one day have someone else be in charge of the camera and you can take the day off and enjoy everthing around you, I know I truly felt relieved that trip that I could have some time off from being the one that always take the photos.
